Tekashi released his debut studio album from jail. 6ix9ine, his former manager, and others were picked up by the FBI on racketeering and weapons charges on Nov, 25th, just a few days before the album released. These charges stem from a crackdown on the Nine Trey Blood gang whom 6ix9ine previously associated himself with. If found guilty, Tekashi could serve life in jail. Tekashi plead not guilty to these charges, and will stand trial in September of 2019. Problems with the law are not new to the rainbow haired rapper. Back in 2015 he was arrested for using a minor in a sexual performance, which he is still on probation for.
Although incarcerated, 6ix9ines debut studio album “Dummy Boy” still placed #1 on the Billboard top 200. Originally it placed second, behind Travis Scott’s “Astroworld”. A discrepancy was noticed by Nielsen, who works for Billboard claiming that Soundcloud reported their statistics late. Tekashi’s album was leaked online, but nonetheless the album still sold 66,000 units in just three days. Tracks from his album dominated US iTunes’ top hip hop songs chart – with ‘Kika’ at one, ‘Mama’ at three, ‘Waka’ at four, ‘Tic Toc’ at five and ‘Feefa’ at ten.
This very controversial artist has made his way into the limelight, in a way we are noticing as a trend in hip hop today. Dressing weird, being controversial, and trolling are all things Tekashi 6ix9ine used to make his way to the top.
